The projects initiated by Tohu & Bohu are artistic in nature, embedded in the design context. We stage utopias, experiment and create models that can lead to changes in socially and environmentally conscious thinking and acting.
Working with glass requires professional skills and machinery. However, for our first production line, we have chosen to use ’cold glass techniques’ as these techniques are based on mechanical processes like: cutting, grinding, polishing, and gluing so don’t require as much expertise or energy. This will also enable the workshop to run as a self organized cooperation. We are starting with a small production of tableware glass items made from glass bottles.
Our products are the result of many years of design work and many experiments with reusing materials (glass from non-returnable bottles, cans, glass jars) as well as natural materials (clay, porcelain, crystal glass). Some products were designed for the purpose of workshops provided for people with certain physical limitations. These products have already entered a certain T&B canon and we enjoy their popularity. Simplicity of workmanship and material as well as the main factor, i.e. the lowest possible energy emission during their production. Already in the design phase this is our main determinant. We are most happy when we can engage people from various environments to produce our design and thus give them the impact of socially and ecologically sustainable work. All products have a more or less artistic accent because they are 100% handmade and also from materials often not fully repetitive.
„TransBotanic "is an interdisciplinary artistic project which goal is to create a botanical microcosm in urban space. Craftsmen, architects, scientists, social workers, designers and artists from Poland and Switzerland together with the people who found themselves on the margins of society want to build the mobile greenhouse. To create among asphalt urban landscape a capsule full of botanical diversity housed in a single parking space. Through social commitment to cultivation mobile garden platform will offer the opportunity of workshops in its space. As well discourses and educational opportunities for residents of the cities. The mobility of this garden micro architecture will allow for free movement in any urban areas which will allow for formation new socio-cultural interactions and gain experience in the local community.
„Trans Table” is a project that aims to cross intercultural, international and inter-social boundaries. The most important roles in this project will be sustainable cooperation and design. Designers and artists from Germany and Poland together with excluded people (suffering from homelessness) will try to complement each other as best as possible during the joint construction of this "Table". The table as a place for meetings, discussions, joint meals, work, writing letters is to become a supporting element of the entire cooperation. It will be co-created during the entire period of the workshop, everyone will contribute to its creation and transformation until we reach the final version suitable for all participants. The conclusion of the whole action, cooperation and finding yourself in the space will be to set this table with a hand-prepared tableware and to eat together a symbolic dinner consisting of your own pastries and homemade wine. The finale is foreseen as a symbolic supper, but achieving it will require a long path of acceptance and understanding, contrary to the encountered small and large borders.
Creators of arts, design and science from Poland, Germany and Switzerland are gathering with people from the margins of society and are affected by homelessness. Together we create a value-adding table company.Through introductions into work techniques, materials and workshops the participants will gain an insight into versatile fields of art and science. What has been learned can be applied and broadened in the social workshops. The artistic The design of the project is deliberately designed. The artistic design of the project is deliberately designed. The participants should be able to act creatively and independently, and no pre-prepared work program should be put on. Events during the duration of the project become points of contact for long-term cultural exchange and thus provide the basis for expansion. The experience will open up creative perspectives.
The Seven Days of Creation / 7DoC / is a concept of a modular valuessystem combined in a coherent philosophy of basic content providing a solution for designing a harmonious life. Through a series of practical modules ‚Seven days of Creation‘ explores our fundamental needs in life, shelter, food and its preservation, clothing ourselves,
alongside energy and the responsibility we have to protect nature and work with it. This is all done through a design lense with self-sufficiency at the core.By connecting to these themes metaphysically and practically a different perspective on human life can be deemed possible where we take responsibility for our surroundings and make sustainable and smart design choices.
